How to Import Recipes into Paprika Recipe Manager

A complete guide to getting recipes into Paprika from any source.

Overview

Paprika Recipe Manager is one of the best apps for organizing your recipe collection. There are a few ways to add recipes to it. You can save directly from a URL, import .paprikarecipes files, or convert PDFs and documents with tools like PDF to Paprika. This guide covers every method so you can get all of your recipes into Paprika, no matter where they are stored.

Method 1: Save Recipes from a URL

The fastest way to add a recipe to Paprika is directly from a website. Paprika has a built-in browser that can automatically detect and extract recipe information from most cooking websites.

On macOS or Windows

  1. Open Paprika Recipe Manager on your computer.
  2. Click the browser icon in the toolbar (or press Cmd+L on Mac / Ctrl+L on Windows).
  3. Navigate to the recipe page by typing or pasting the URL.
  4. Once the page loads, click the Save Recipe button in the toolbar.
  5. Paprika will extract the recipe name, ingredients, directions, and other fields. Review the extracted data, make any corrections, and click Save.

On iOS or Android

  1. Open Paprika on your phone or tablet.
  2. Tap the browser tab (the globe icon at the bottom on iOS, or the browser icon on Android).
  3. Navigate to the recipe page.
  4. Tap the Save button to extract the recipe.
  5. Review and save the recipe to your collection.

Tip: You can also use the Paprika share extension on iOS and Android. When viewing a recipe in Safari, Chrome, or any other browser, tap the share button and select Paprika to save the recipe directly.

Method 2: Import a .paprikarecipes File

The .paprikarecipes format is Paprika's native export/import format. It's a compressed file that contains one or more recipes with all of their data (ingredients, directions, notes, photos, and more). This is the best format for transferring recipes between Paprika installations or importing recipes converted from other sources.

On macOS

  1. Open Paprika Recipe Manager.
  2. Go to File > Import in the menu bar.
  3. Select your .paprikarecipes file and click Open.
  4. The recipes will be added to your library.

On Windows

  1. Open Paprika Recipe Manager.
  2. Click the gear icon and select Import.
  3. Choose the .paprikarecipes file from your file system.
  4. The imported recipes will appear in your library.

On iOS

  1. Transfer the .paprikarecipes file to your device (via email, AirDrop, iCloud Drive, or any file-sharing method).
  2. Tap the file to open it. iOS should offer to open it in Paprika.
  3. Alternatively, open Paprika, go to Settings > Import/Export, and browse for the file.

On Android

  1. Transfer the .paprikarecipes file to your device (via email, Google Drive, or file transfer).
  2. Open Paprika, tap the menu, and go to Settings > Import.
  3. Browse to and select the .paprikarecipes file.

Method 3: Convert PDFs and Documents

Many home cooks have recipes saved as PDF files (from cookbooks, scanned recipe cards, or downloaded pages), Word documents, or plain text files. Paprika cannot directly import these formats, but you can convert them first using PDF to Paprika.

  1. Go to pdftopaprika.com.
  2. Upload your recipe files (PDF, DOCX, TXT, or HTML). You can upload up to 20 files at once.
  3. Wait a few seconds while your documents are converted.
  4. Download the generated .paprikarecipes file.
  5. Import the .paprikarecipes file into Paprika using the steps in Method 2 above.

This method works great for digitizing a physical recipe collection. Scan your recipe cards or cookbook pages to PDF, then batch-convert them all at once.

Tips for Best Results

  • Clear formatting helps: Recipes with clearly labeled sections (Ingredients, Directions, etc.) will be extracted more accurately, whether saving from a URL or converting from a PDF.
  • One recipe per file: When converting PDFs or documents, best results come from files that contain a single recipe each. If you have a multi-recipe document, consider splitting it into separate files first.
  • Review after import: automated extraction is very good but not perfect. Always review your imported recipes in Paprika and correct any fields that may have been misidentified.
  • Use high-quality scans:If you're scanning recipe cards or cookbook pages, make sure the text is legible. Higher resolution scans produce better extraction results.
  • Back up your library:Before doing a large import, consider exporting your existing Paprika library as a backup using Paprika's built-in export function.
